Microsoft Lumia 940 & 940 XL Release Date & Price: 950 & 950 XL Arriving Instead? First Windows 10 Flagship Smartphones Expected [Rumors]

Microsoft is expected to launch two new flagships this year. One that's codenamed Cityman and the other is Talkman. These pair of Windows-powered devices were referred to as the Lumia 940 and 940 XL. But if a new report is anything to go by, it looks like rumors got it all wrong.

A brand new reports from IT Home, a Chinese publication that posts all about Windows phones, claims that Microsoft is working on handsets called Lumia 950 and 950 XL all along. This means that the Redmond-based software giant is one generation ahead in its series.

The latest high-end handset from the company belonging to the same lineup is the Lumia 930. Naturally, when news about its so-called successor made the rounds, the forthcoming devices were christened as Lumia 940 and 940 XL, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

According to Pocket-Lint, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL are touted to be the first ever smartphones from Microsoft to run Windows 10, the latest all-encompassing operating system by the company scheduled to fully release on July 29.

Both the alleged Microsoft flagships, as per Phone Arena, will come in an aesthetically thin full-metal chassis. They are reportedly getting 3GB RAM, 32GB in-built storage that is expandable with a microSD card and a Type C-USB reversible port.

The Lumia handset with the Talkman alias is the smaller one and is called the Lumia 950. According to Times of India, this device will don a 5.2-inch Quad HD resolution display. It will be furnished with a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor and will pack a 3000mAh battery.

The site also reports that the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL aka Cityman will sport a 5.7-inch touchscreen with the same resolution as its smaller kin. Though under its hood will be a newer and more powerful 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and a bigger 3300mAh battery.

Phone Arena adds that both will get a hulking 20MP rear-facing camera, but the unit on the Lumia 950 XL will feature three LED flash. There should also be a 5MP selfie shooter. Both will have Continuum support via Windows 10, which basically transform them into a portable PC.

IT Home reports that Microsoft will lift the veil off the Lumia 950 and 950 XL by October and the device will be sold the following month. Of course, the company is yet to respond to these claims but it is exciting to see what the titan from Redmond has to offer.
