Books Transforming Into Furnitures? Check Out HK Designer Mike Mak's 'Bookniture'

A designer from Hong Kong has found a way to make furniture portable. Mike Mak calls his creation the Bookniture, a book that can transform into a multifunctional furniture "in a flip." The product combines the portability of a book and the support of everyday fixtures.

In the official Bookniture website for the mind-blowing invention, Mak says that the Bookniture can turn into "a stool, a foot rest, a nightstand, a standing work desk and many more." Add an extra book, it can be made into a bench. Stack a few more and users got themselves a handy shelf.

The best part about the product is its ability to be transformed into a big furniture without having to take so much space in a user's home or bag before setup. Mak, a BA Industrial Design graduate from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, touts that Bookniture basically makes any place perfect for a gathering.

The revolutionary designer had a rather simple reason that motivated him to produce Bookniture. In the same website, he shared the story of how the idea came about. "I love having friends at my place, but have never had enough seats for everyone," he wrote.

"My guests and I would always end up just sitting on the floor," he grumbled. It dawned on him when he saw his empty bookshelf and honeycomb samples (a durable material used in shelves and tables) that he can actually make "a kind of seat that doesn't take up any floor space" that he doesn't need.

Mak launched the Bookniture project via Kickstarter back in Feb. 6 and it only took five days for him to reach his goal and ultimately become one step closer to bringing the compact furniture to life. By March 18, it netted $449,969 USD and swayed 4,007 backers.

From there, Bookniture continued to evolve, as Mak detailed on the Kickstarter page. The new origami structure makes it easier to grip. It also became thinner, with the weight distributed evenly for ultimate comfort. After nine weeks in "nonstop" production, the first batch of the product was ready.

The Bookniture comes in four styles. There's one that comes in Field Brown, with a Light Grey/Red double-sided felt top, and there's another in Leather Black, which Dark Grey/ Black double-sided felt top.

Made of USA Kraft paper, all four have the same 33cm x 18cm x 4cm dimension and weighs only 1.6KG. As per Daily Mail, the product only costs £55 and £57. Those interested in getting their own Bookniture can order from the official website, with Mak and his team preparing for a late July shipment.
