World's Smallest Books Take Center Stage at the Sharjah Book Fair

Tiny books are turning heads at the Sharjah International Book Fair 2015, according to Gulf News. The 10-day event is held annually in the culture and industry hub of Sharjah, located in the oil-rich country of United Arab Emirates. For its 2015 run, the book fair is being held from Nov. 4-14, 2015 at the city's Expo Centre.

These ultra small books are published by the Peruvian company The Smallest Books in the World, or Los Libros Mas Pequeños del Mundo in Spanish. It is the brainchild of Alberto Briceño Polo, a native of Cajamarca in Peru.

Measuring a mere 2cmx1cm in size, the company's smallest book carries a Dh10 price tag, which is a little less than $3. Their biggest book on print measures 6cmx4cm. All of their books are made by hand.

Some popular titles include "Magical World" which, as the name implies, is about magical beings such as elves and dragons. The book "ABC" is an educational and colorful walk-through of the alphabet.

On the other hand, the books "The Nectar of the Bible" and "The Nectar of the Koran" bring readers closer to the holy scriptures. The company also publishes classics such as "The Little Prince" and "Don Quixote de la Mancha."

For the culturally-inclined, they have Spanish dictionaries and books on Peruvian cuisine. Their other products include book keychains.

According to an earlier feature by Prensa Latina, the founder Briceño is a philosophy lover who has the penchant for collecting verses. His first produced volume was finished in 1970.

During an interview with Gulf News, sales manager Luis Pereyra said that the minuscule books were initially intended to be given as gifts to friends. He also adds, "A lot of people still buy them as gifts for others. People like these kinds of books. The response at the book fair has been good for us."

In an interview with The National, the fair chairman Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri says, "The Sharjah International Book Fair continues to gain in popularity and play a role in enriching cultural communication, inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. This year the festival will include 890 local and Arab publishing houses, and see the participation of 433 by foreign publishing houses."

According to the fair's official website, the Sharjah International Book Fair started in 1982 and is organized by the Department of Culture and Information at the Government of Sharjah.
