Hunger games DVD release date: Huge Weekend Sales, Special Features
Let the games begin -- again. With Saturday's release of one of 2012's biggest breakout films, "The Hunger Games," fans can finally cuddle up with Katniss and practice their bow-stance in their living rooms.
Tremendous crowds gathered all over the nation for the movie's midnight DVD and Blu-ray release on Friday night, and retailers were still reporting strong sales on Saturday. According to a clerk at one Wal-Mart store, "It's the fastest I've ever seen one of our DVDs sell." According to Comicbook.com many retailers are now completely sold out of "The Hunger Games" DVD. "The Hunger Games" retailer exclusive DVDs seemed to be the first to go with many stores only having standard Blu-ray copies remaining now.

Cast members made special appearances at select Walmart locations in Phoenix, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, greeting the fans and signing DVDs and Blu-rays. There was a special launch event at Toys 'R' Us in NYC's Times Square today. To date "The Hunger Games," directed by Gary Ross and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, has grossed $684.5M worldwide since its release in March.
While official figures haven't been released by Lion's Gate yet, indications are that sales are going very, very well. According to The-Numbers.com, the current top selling DVD for 2012 is "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" with 5.2 million copies sold. It's very possible that The Hunger Games could exceed this number and become the top selling DVD for 2012 in its first weekend of release.
James Cameron's "Avatar"is the current record-holder for fastest selling DVD of all time. "Avatar" sold 6.7 million DVDs and Blu-rays in its first four days of release, which seems to be within reach for "The Hunger Games." As far as the best-selling DVD of all time, "Finding Nemo" appears to still hold the record with reports from a couple years back putting the count at 40 million plus DVDs sold. While "Finding Nemo" is likely safe for now, with Hunger Games fans picking up multiple copies to get all the various exclusives, it's likely the record won't be safe for long.
"Hunger Games" DVD special features include:
A two-hour documentary feature: The World is Watching: Making The Hunger Games
Featurettes: Game Maker: Suzanne Collins and The Hunger Games Phenomenon, Letters From the Rose Garden, Controlling the Games, and A Conversation with Gary Ross (director) and Elvis Mitchell,
