‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 4 premiere date 2012: Paul Wesley Talks, Season 3 Bloopers (Video)

With the debut of season 4 of "The Vampire Diaries" fast approaching in October, the TV show's Paul Wesley has been dropping hints in interviews recently about where the series is headed, and what he'd like to see happen.

The actor, who plays Stefan alongside Ian Somerhalder as the brothers Salvatore, let loose that he isn't entirely sure that Stefan is the best choice for Elena to end up with at the end of the day.

According to Digital Spy, "I definitely don't think that Elena belongs with a vampire, to be honest with you ... I think that her love with Stefan is an undying romance that will exist forever, but I don't know if the circumstances allow for them to end up together," said Wesley.

"I think that's just sort of a romanticized point of view... Nobody ever just ends up happy ever after when you have vampires and werewolves running around!"

"Actually, I don't want anyone to end up with Elena - it would be far more interesting and profound if she basically said goodbye to the two brothers, and vanished in to thin air, and then maybe got a nice boyfriend, like Matt Donovan, the human... the only human on the cast. "

"I sure as hell hope [Ripper Stefan will return] ... I think it would be foolish of them not to bring the Ripper back... I think the work that I did was much more profound in terms of affecting the audience than the other stuff. The other stuff was great too, but I just selfishly enjoyed the hell out of it."

Wesley also revealed that he didn't buy the ending of season 3 when Stefan couldn't save Elena from the truck after it went under. He also went as far as to tell the writers that the plotline didn't make sense. They eventually gave him their justifications, but he still doesn't buy it.

Next, he revealed that he thinks Stefan will end up blaming himself for not saving Elena. Finally, he said that he thinks Elena is going to rethink her whole decision about picking Stefan once she gets all her compelled memories back, now that she's a vampire.

As for what Wesley actually wants to see Stefan do instead of be with Elena (at least for the time being), he claims that it would be interesting to see both he and his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) actually try to move on with their lives for a while without Elena - mostly because it would be interesting to see how they reacted to being in a completely different situation than they have been for most of the series. Would it be interesting? Sure - just so long as one of them finds their way back to her by the end of the show's run.

He added that he would love Stefan to "go off the wagon" in season four, also suggesting that he would like more flashbacks in the future.

"I loved Stefan in the prohibition era, the 1920s," he said. "I thought it was phenomenal. So I selfishly - I'm speaking from a very selfish perspective - want to do more of that sort of stuff."

Wesley also noted that he is looking forward to having more screen time with Candice Accola, who plays Caroline, saying that they have "great chemistry".

He added that he "adores" Claire Holt, who stars as Rebekah, admitting that he thinks "there will be repercussions" for Rebekah's involvement in Elena's death.

Season 4 debuts on October 11th, 2012.
