iPad Mini Release Date: Why Price Will Likely be the Same as Apple iPod Touch; Can it Work?

The iPad Mini release date is expected to be in October. This is good news for Apple fans, but it leaves many to wonder what would be the price because of Apple's new iPod Touch.

Apple unveiled the new iPod Touch at a press conference on Sept. 12.

The iPod Touch has a 4-inch Retina Display, Dual-core A5 Chip, iOS 6 (Apple's new operating system), Siri, Airplay Mirroring, Shared Photo Streams, and an improved 5 megapixel iSight camera with autofocus, flash, FaceTime HD and Panaroma. It's also thinner and lighter with a superthin aluminum body, and also comes in fun colors such as blue, pink, and yellow. And of course, it comes with the new Apple EarPods.

It also has a lightening dock connector and larger battery.

In terms of price, the new Touch, which will ship some time in October, is priced at $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB.

Many are wondering: Where does the rumored iPad Mini fit in?

According to TechOpinions, Apple may price the iPad Mini the same or nearly the same as the Touch. Here's why writer John Kirk thinks Apple can do this:

"Apple is clearly aiming the new iPod Touch at kids. In addition to all of the features described above, the new iPod Touch comes in kid-friendly colors and with a kid-friendly carrying Loop. Further, at the event where they announced the new iPod Touch, Apple heavily emphasisezed the iPod Touch's ability to watch movies on its wide-screen display, the 1750,00 available games and the 150 million players made available via Game Center. Apple is positioning the iPod Touch as a device for kids.

"I believe that Apple is going to position the iPod Touch as the device for kids and the iPad Mini (or whatever it might be called) as a personal iPad - useful for everything an iPad can do except for screen intensive Applications."

Kirk also believes, as do other reports, that the Ipad Mini will not have Retina Display.

According to Ewan Spence at Forbes.com, he believes also that it will be around the same price as the Touch.

"From the evidence today, I'd expect to see a 16GB iPad Mini with Wi-Fi connectivity to launch at $299, with a 32GB model at $399, and a 64GB model at $499."

According to ZDNet, an iPad Mini "would ideally need to be priced at or below $299 in order to remain competitive in the face of the iPad 2 and 3."

WorldNewsResource has the problem mapped out for Apple in terms of their rivals, Google and Amazon:

"It has never been a case of whether or not the iPad Mini specs and features would stand up against its Android rivals - the Apple badge alone is enough to see millions of sales guaranteed prior to launch. Instead, it is a case of how Apple would be able to launch an iPad Mini at a price low enough to compete with the $200 Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle, while at the same time maintaining the success of the iPod Touch range."

Reports say the iPad Mini will be more affordable and come with a powerful processor. It is also assumed that the new tablet will feature Apple's upcoming operating system, iO6, which includes a new, Google-free Maps app, and Passbook, and promises better Facebook integration, better maps, and better video conferences that use cellular data and Siri. It is also said to have a smaller dock connector, two speakers, and thinner bezel. It may also feature a music service similar to Pandora radio and FaceTime.
