Nokia Lumia 920 Specs, Release Date: How Windows Phone 8 Could Still Thrive vs iPhone 5, New Asus Padfone 2 to Compete

Nokia fans (and others) are waiting for Microsoft to unveil the latest details on the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 at an Oct. 29 event.

According to PCWorld, "Carriers on that day are also expected to announce pricing, availability, and pre-order details for the first round of Windows Phone 8 devices."

Engadget reported that both Windows 8 smartphones got FCC approval.

With high anticipation, it doesn't seem like Nokia is out of the hot water even though its flagship phones sport desirable specs.

The Lumia 920 runs on Microsoft Windows Phone 8. It takes many of the physical design elements from previous generations of Lumia handsets, but improves on internal hardware and display technology. Some of the new tech specs include PureMotion HD+ 4.5 inch display (1280 x 768 resolution), Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, NFC chip, 2,000mAh battery, and Qi wireless charging. Nokia is touting the Lumia 920′s premier feature as its new camera lens, the Carl Zeiss lens. It has rounded edges and colorful covers with a PureView camera.

The Lumia 820 looks to be Nokia's new mid-range WP8 device with a 4.3 inch OLED WVGA ClearBlack display with Sunlight Readability Enhancement, 8GB storage and microSD card slot, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Qualcomm processor, 1GB RAM, and Dual-LEAD flash auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics. It features Nokia Maps, Drive, and City Lens.

Apple gives a lot of competition with its newly released iPhone 5. The new smartphone has been winning spec comparisons. However, Autoomobile.com reported that Apple is the "prematurely declared winner" because Nokia hasn't unveiled all of the Lumia 920's specs, Nokia still has a chance.

"Little is known about the storage options of the Lumia 920 at the moment, but the camera may be better than the one on the iPhone 5, as Apple haven't made that many improvements to their 8 megapixel camera," writer Rick Berke wrote. "One of the reasons why GR picked the iPhone 5 winner over the Nokia Lumia 920 is that we have not really seen much about the Nokia Lumia 920 and its specs."

The comparison was done by Gadget Review.

"We also don't know what to expect from Windows Phone 8, and for instance, how long the battery will last on the handset in real world usage," Berke said. "One can argue that declaring the iPhone 5 winner because not much is known about the Nokia Lumia 920 can be premature."

There may be some new competition for Nokia as well.

Asus just launched its latest device, the Padfone 2. It is expected to compete with other smartphones on the market, according to IBtimes.

According to TG Daily, the Padfone 2 will have a 720p resolution with a 4.7-inch Super IPS + touchscreen. It's powered by a Qualcomm S4 Pro APQ8064 processor with 1.5 Ghz and 2GB of RAM. It has a 2,140 mAh battery with 13-megapixel rear camera via a Sony CCD, along with a microSIM card slot. However, it will not have a removable back panel and no micro SD card slot for memory expansion. It is expected to run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and is slated to launch in December throughout Europe and Asia. Other countries are to be announced soon.

It has a tablet dock which the phone "now simply slides into the sleeve rather than having a complicated compartment that reminded us of a cassette deck."

"That dock sleeve is loaded with a 10.1-inch screen supporting a resolution of 1280 x 800, along with its own 5000 mAh battery," TG Daily reported.

PhonesReview reported that the release date for AT&T seems to point to Nov. 4.

According to TheVerge, the Lumia 920 will be available for pre-order in the U.S. on Oct. 21.

"Sources familiar with AT&T and Microsoft's plans have revealed to The Verge that the carrier will start taking pre-orders for its range of Windows Phone 8 handsets on October 21st - including the HTC 8X and Nokia's Lumia 920."
