Children's Book 'How A Baby Is Made' Resurfaces! Vintage Print Shows Process in Graphic Detail

A 1975 children's book has been rediscovered and went viral recently on Facebook. The book in the center of attention is Per Holm Knudsen's "How A Baby Is Made" that teaches children the process involved in making babies, complete with hippies-inspired seventies illustrations. BuzzFeed reports that the cleverly written but rather blunt children's book has resurfaced, thanks to Facebook user Crysta-Mai Elassaad who uploaded pictures of the book on her account. As of now, the pictures have been shared over 130,000 times.

The book's storyline is pretty is simple and goes straight to the point. "This is a baby," the narrative begins. Illustrations of the baby's parents come next, and what comes after is anything but discrete. In the majority of the book, the parents are shown naked and having sex, or "making love" according to the book. The parents remain naked throughout the development of the fertilized egg inside the mother's womb. The story follows their baby's vaginal birth, who comes out of the womb all smiles. The book ends with the line "This is the true story of how babies are made."

The book also does not shy away at using medical terms. It made use of words such as vagina, testicles, penis, and intercourse while sticking to its main purpose, which is to educated children about the birds and the bees. The story is quite simple enough for children to understand, as well, devoid of dialogues and exchanges between characters, and referred to the newborn baby as "brand-new person".

As pictures of the book make its rounds online, many of Facebook users made hilarious comments about it. But regardless of it being the butt of jokes over in the Internet, there's no doubt about the book being ahead of its time.

The man behind the children's book, Per Holm Knudsen, is a Danish author and psychotherapist. Not much is known about him. But based on his work, it is safe to assume that Knudsen wants parents to be more truthful when having "the talk" with their kids. The book is already out of print, but for those who are interested to use it to their children, or just for plain amusement purposes, Amazon is selling secondhand copies of the book.

There is also an available animated video of the book online that is worth checking out. The video is delightfully narrated by a female voiceover with added details and animations. Check it out below.
