'Breaking Dawn Part 2:' How Surprise Ending, Epic Finale Helped Make 'Twilight' History [REVIEWS]

"Breaking Dawn Part 2" is making "Twilight" history with high box-office numbers for the Thanksgiving weekend, and it most likely has to do with that surprise ending the cast has been teasing about.

For the extended Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend of Nov. 21-25, the epic finale totaled $64 million in ticket sales, according to The Sacromento Bee, which was 25 percent of the total revenue for the biggest Hollywood holiday weekend on record.

Alt Film Guide reported that after 8-9 days out, the $120 million-budgeted film grossed an estimated $577.75 million worldwide: $226.95m in the US/Canada and $350.8m internationally.

"Breaking Dawn Part 2" leads the way to be the "Twilight" franchise's biggest second weekend ever: $41.3 million, according to E! Online.

So how come "BD Part 2" will be the second biggest "Twilight" hit? Well one reason might be because it is indeed the last film in the franchise and everybody, even those who don't want watch the movies religiously, wants to see it.

Another reason is the secret ending, which has gotten rave reviews.

We are talking about the fighting scene between the Volturi and the Cullens, the wolf pack, and the witnesses that came to stand by Renesmee as a half-human, half-vampire, not an immortal child.

The action sequence [SPOILER] was touched on in Stephanie Meyer's novel but was not written out. The movie replaced Alice's vision with an actual battle sequence, where popular characters, such as Seth Clearwater and Jasper Cullen, are killed by the Volturi. Watching the film, you would think that it was happening in the film, but it was only Alice's vision of what would happen to Aro if he would decide to fight the Cullens (he would die, along with all his witnesses and other Volturi members).

In a review by CSI Monitor writer Molly Driscoll, the surprise twist did "get the audience on the edge of their seats" and that the directors being creative are a good thing.

"Good for them for changing SOMETHING (even if, comparing it to the text, it's an incredibly small change)," Driscoll said. "I know that adapting a book into a film is an incredibly delicate balance, even more so when the book has a devoted fanbase attached. But the director and the creative team behind him or her needs to feel free to create the best product, the best movie, that they can without it being obvious that they tied themselves to every word on the page of that book."

In another review by Leavenworthtimes.com, writer Stephen Shupe said that he "thoroughly enjoyed 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2'" because it "displays a welcome sense of self-aware humor, and it boasts fewer embarrassing moments that make you want to cover your ears and hum really loud."

Though he hasn't read the books, Shupe said that "Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg have outdone Meyer by realizing the full potential of the material."

"'Breaking Dawn - Part 2' stakes a claim in fanboy territory, making it arguably the only "Twilight" movie that can be enjoyed by both sexes. Edward's family finds allies who will help defend his and Bella's baby. The scenes introducing these characters and their various supernatural abilities are straight out of 'X-Men.' The final showdown with fantastical creatures facing off on a battlefield looks like the finale of a 'Harry Potter' or 'Lord of the Rings' movie," Shupe wrote. "Michael Sheen steals the show with a gleeful performance that's as over-the-top nutty as Palpatine in 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.' The British actor had previously had very little to do in these movies as head of the Volturi clan besides issue decrees like the vampire pope. Wait until you see him out on the battlefield."

Overall, Shupe said that despite "a very high ick factor" shown by the romantic connection between Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and Resnesmee (Mackenzie Foy), he was "shocked to report, I didn't roll my eyes once, and I loved the cool twist at the end. There's a word I thought I'd never use to describe a 'Twilight' movie: cool."
