Doctor Who Marks 50th Anniversary with 11 Short Stories: Eoin Colfer First Among The 11 Other Authors

Doctor Who celebrated its 50th anniversary and to mark this auspicious occasion has decided to launch 11 new short stories by 11 well-known children's authors on the 23rd of every month. The books will be available in e-book forms.

Doctor Who created quite a television sensation and to celebrate its 50th anniversary, a rather unique idea has been thought up. 11 well-known children's authors will come together to create 11 new short stories that will be released on the 23rd of each month till the month of November.  Each of the stories will feature one of the eleven "Doctor Who" doctors, from Hartnell via Tom Baker to the most recent Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith.

The creator of the bestselling teenage spy Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer has been announced to be the first author who will release his story "A Big Hand for the Doctor" January 23, 2013.  His story will feature the first Doctor, played by William Hartnell.

Colfer reveals to The Guardian that he chose to write the first story which was about Doctor William Hartnell because his "grumpiness" intrigued him.

"Subsequent Doctors became more chipper and almost childlike and I found the first Doctor interesting because he was not so developed and I could have a little leeway with the character," he said.

The famous author also talks to the tabloid about his first encounter with Doctor Who on paper.

"As a boy I had been reading the Doctor Who books for years before I ever saw a single episode," he said, "and I found that the on‐screen version of the first Doctor was almost identical to the version in my imagination."

Each book will cost approximately $3.2. Publisher of the stories, Juliet Matthews promises that each of the story stories will bring "an individual style, imagination and interpretation to their e-short tribute to The Doctor", describing them as "a who's who of children's fiction coming together to celebrate the much‐loved Doctor Who".
