Pope Francis has unveiled a new memoir, "Life: My Story Through History," which offers a unique perspective on his faith journey intertwined with global events.

The book, translated from the original Italian by Aubrey Botsford, explores the Pope's memories and observations spanning over eight decades, delving into significant moments that have shaped the world. From the Holocaust to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the moon landing, the 1986 World Cup, the 9/11 attacks, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Pope Francis reflects on these events and their profound impact on humanity.

In the book, the Pope addresses major crises today, including war, climate change, racial discrimination, and various social and cultural issues. Amidst these weighty topics, he shares candid and heartfelt stories highlighting his humanity.

Personal Trials and Spiritual Journey

In an exclusive excerpt shared with PEOPLE, Pope Francis recounted moments from his past, including when he faced a significant personal test. He recalled being dazzled by a young woman at a family wedding. He had also been engaged to a kind young woman employed in the film industry, who later wedded and started a family. Despite the distraction, he eventually refocused his attention on his calling and dedicated himself fully to his vocation.

The Pope also recounted battling a serious illness that nearly claimed his life. He expressed gratitude to Sister Cornelia Caraglio, a Dominican nurse who played a pivotal role in his recovery. The book also details Pope Francis' journey toward joining the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, and his experiences studying, teaching, and serving in Argentina and Chile.

Health Concerns and Criticism of Reforms

Pope Francis addressed speculations regarding his health. According to the Associated Press, Pope Francis has encountered health issues like bronchitis, flu, and recent surgeries. Despite this, he emphasized his commitment to the papacy while acknowledging the possibility of resignation in case of serious health impediments. Nevertheless, he declared that his present state of health does not justify such a decision, expressing thankfulness for his good health and resolve to pursue his initiatives. The concept of a pope stepping down was not extensively contemplated until the unexpected retirement of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013, which drew attention to the idea.

The Pope acknowledged the accusations of undermining the papacy and facing resistance to reforms mandated after his 2013 election. Francis reaffirmed his recent decision to permit Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples, emphasizing God's love for all, including sinners, and downplaying concerns of potential church division, despite opposition from some conservative bishops, including those in Africa.

"Life: My Story Through History" provides readers with a window into the life of Pope Francis and the experiences that have influenced his convictions and perspective. Published by HarperOne, the book will hit shelves on March 19 and is now available for preorders. Furthermore, an audiobook rendition will debut on the same day. Stephen Colbert, a noted admirer of Pope Francis, will narrate the six-hour audiobook, which will be released on March 19 via HarperAudio, alongside Franciscan friar and priest John Quigley.
