Mellody Hobson, a notable figure in the business realm, has revealed the cover of her upcoming book titled "Priceless Facts About Money." The book aims to simplify the subject of money for young readers. It is scheduled for release by Candlewick Press this autumn.

Hobson is the co-CEO and president of Ariel Investments and is the chair of the Board of Directors for Starbucks Corporation. With her experience, Hobson acknowledges the importance of financial literacy. In her forthcoming book, featuring illustrations by Caitlin Stevens, she simplifies complex financial ideas, from deciphering the symbols on U.S. bills to exploring the origins of currency nicknames.

Exploring the Past and Present of Currency and Finance

The book discusses the history of money, including facts like the Maya civilization's use of chocolate as a currency and the development of the banking system. Readers will also encounter amazing facts about money from many cultures worldwide and information about modern financial tools like credit cards and ATMs.

From decoding the symbols on U.S. bills to unraveling the origins of money-related nicknames like 'bacon' or 'cheddar,' Hobson's friendly approach makes finance less intimidating. The book explores essential financial topics like bartering, profit and loss, the evolution of credit, and the emergence of ATMs. Additionally, it includes entertaining facts about global money.

Actress Reese Witherspoon supported the book and emphasized the vital importance of financial education in helping young individuals accomplish their goals through prudent money handling. A Trailblazer in Business and Leadership

Hobson's accomplishments have garnered her acclaim. She holds positions on the boards of prestigious organizations like JP Morgan Chase & Co. She was also previously the chairman of DreamWorks Animation and contributed financial insights to "CBS News" and "Good Morning America."

As a co-CEO herself, Hobson advocates for the co-CEO model, emphasizing its effectiveness in leading a company. In a recent discussion about Ariel's documentary, "Ariel at 40," Hobson reflected on her over 30-year career at the company, which was founded in 1983 by John W. Rogers, Jr.

Hobson highlighted the collaborative dynamic between herself and Rogers, emphasizing their ability to cover a broad range of responsibilities individually and collectively. She emphasized the clarity of their roles within the firm, with each managing distinct areas without interference from the other.

Looking back on her path to achievement, Hobson recalled guidance from her mother upon entering the workforce. Her mother stressed the importance of becoming indispensable, ensuring that her employer couldn't function without her. This advice deeply resonated with Hobson, leading her to embrace the concept fully and strive for excellence in her career.

Nurturing Change Through Philanthropy

In addition to her professional endeavors, Hobson, alongside her husband, George Lucas, has played a significant role in philanthropy through the Hobson Lucas Family Foundation. They donated to the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Hobson spoke about her and her husband's charitable work while receiving a Medal of Philanthropy in 2019.

Hobson expressed the perspective of viewing themselves as custodians of society's money. She articulated that they temporarily hold these funds before redistributing them, emphasizing a sense of responsibility and the desire to impact society positively. Additionally, she expressed gratitude for the chance to contribute positively and hoped to motivate others to follow suit.

"Priceless Facts About Money" will be available for preorder and will be officially released on Oct. 1.
