In the adaptation of Blake Crouch's novel "Dark Matter," actor Joel Edgerton proposed a significant change that transformed the depth of the television series. According to Crouch, during a summit in Los Angeles about two years ago, the actor suggested a pivotal alteration to the storyline shortly after casting Edgerton. 

A Change That Brought Depth to the Story

Edgerton proposed that his character, Jason Desson, should not just strive to return to a perfect world but be driven by the desire to reunite with his family despite the intense trauma they had experienced. This suggestion resonated deeply, adding layers of complexity to the character's motivations and the overall narrative arc of the show.

In the original novel, Jason's family consists of his wife, Daniela, and their son, Charlie; his journey revolves around finding his way back to them. However, in the television series, a heartbreaking addition is made: Jason had two children, Max and Charlie. The revelation that Max passed away due to complications during surgery adds a poignant dimension to Jason's quest. It underscores the idea that his ultimate utopia lies wherever his family is, highlighting the contrast between his selfless longing for familial connection and the selfish motives of his alternate-universe counterpart, Jason 2.

Edgerton's suggestion profoundly impacts the middle and end of the series, adding a layer of depth that enriches the viewing experience. The emotional intensity of Jason's quest is amplified, making his journey to reunite with his family even more poignant and significant.

Apple TV+ has significantly changed the Dark Matter storyline, particularly in elaborating on Jason 2's post-swap life. This aspect receives less attention in the book, often seen from Daniela's perspective, leaving Jason 2's motivations unclear. However, Crouch's adaptation provides more depth to Jason 2's mission, enriching the show's narrative and enhancing its effectiveness.

Reviews: Strong Performances, Less Expositions

The TV series was well-received. Variety Magazine praised the series for its compelling character exploration, particularly with Edgerton's portrayal of both versions of Jason, showcasing subtle yet distinct differences. The alternate versions of Chicago depicted throughout the multiverse add visual depth thanks to impressive set production. Additionally, Daniela's various iterations contribute to the intrigue of the narrative.

The scientific aspects surrounding Jason 2's multiverse-traveling machine, The Box, detract from the story's core. Complex sci-fi and physics concepts and repetitive explanations of The Box's mechanics slow down the narrative and sideline other characters, such as Blair.

IGN also praised the adaptation for making notable improvements to the story. However, they suggested the show would benefit from a more condensed introduction and less exposition, trusting the genre-savvy audience to follow along. Despite this, the show features strong performances that effectively convey its emotionally powerful themes. Nonetheless, like its world-hopping protagonist, the series sometimes loses its direction.
