'Ready Player One' & 'Armada' Author Ernest Cline Drops Hint on Next Novel

Bestselling author Ernest Cline recently stopped by Reddit to do an AMA with fans. There he answered tons of questions, some seeking to know his favorite Steven Spielberg movies, Rush albums and books as well as his inclination on pop culture.

One fan asked Cline how much of what he knows about games and music that reflect in the books come from research and how much of it come straight from his own experience. Cline was more than happy to shed light on that and here is what he had to say:

"All of the games, music, shows, and films that I reference in my novels are from my own life. I never make a list of references to try and shoehorn them into the story. I try to weave them in organically, the way you would in a casual conversation with your friends."

During the Q&A, Cline dropped a hint as to what his next book will be, or more accurately, what it won't be about. This is when he responded to a fan who professed his love for his 2011 sci-fi book "Ready Player One," which is being made into a movie to be helmed by Spielberg, and admitted his struggle with tearing through his 2015 novel "Armada."

"Is your next work going to focus further on the relevance and significance of 80s pop culture?" asked the Reddit user, who found "Armada" easier to go through when he thought of it as an "80s action movie/wish fulfillment a la Neverending Story."

"The idea I have for my next novel doesn't use 80's pop culture or video games as central plot elements in the same way that both RPO and ARMADA do," Cline revealed. "But it will (hopefully) be another fun action-adventure story, told in the same spirit as a many of the stories I grew up loving from that era," he continued.

He then made sure to emphasize another thing, adding "PS -- Atreyu was a bad ass." He also confirmed in response to another fan that he will write a couple of follow-ups to "Ready Player One."  Without hesitation, Cline answered "Yes, I have outlined two sequels to RPO. Someday it will be a trilogy."

"And back when I set up ReadyPlayerOne.com, I also registered ReadyPlayerTwo.com and ReadyPlayerThree.com to prevent them from becoming porn sites," he quipped. The author did not reveal a target publication date for his planned titles.

Just recently, Deadline reported that Cline sealed a massive book deal with Crown Publishing, where he was offered a seven-figure getting just for the U.S. rights. This book will be Cline's third and it is expected to be as big, if not bigger than his previous works.
