'Inkheart' Author Cornelia Funke Parts Ways With Chicken House, Opens Own Publishing Company

Internationally acclaimed author Cornelia Funke is starting her own publishing company. As per Publisher Weekly, the bestselling writer behind the children's book favorite "Inkheart" has severed her ties from publishers Chicken House (UK) and Little, Brown and Company (US) due to "creative differences," a bid to get a creative free rein and "to be a sailboat so I can fit into other places."

Funke recalled how her UK publisher, which also spoke on behalf of Chicken House, wanted some full-size, almost story-altering changes in her book "The Golden Yarn," which was released in February in Germany as the third instalment in the "Reckless" series. Upon receiving the e-mail, the author was simply "stunned" of what is being asked of her to do in the title.

"It said, 'We love the book, Cornelia, but could you please change the first chapter? It's a birth scene. That's a little drastic for our audience. Could you please put that somewhere else?' " she shared as quoted by Publisher Weekly. The publishers also wanted Funke to change the "open ending" in the book into an epilogue instead.

Obviously, the "Mirrorworld" author was one to object on these revisions. On the former, she argues that the scene about the princess giving birth as a dark faerie looked on is simply "about love ... and it's about what love does to you, and it's about the fruit of love - a baby." As for the second request, she simply said that "I love that ending."

She also revealed the problem that caused her last seven years with Little, Brown "bitter at times," which involved the publisher putting her "Mirrorworld" series under the 9-12 age group after telling them that it ought to be marketed to ages 14 and up.

"Cornelia is a magnificent writer and LBYR is proud to have launched the Mirrorworld series to critical and commercial success. The decision for Cornelia to pursue independent publication at this stage was entirely mutual and we wish her the best in her new endeavour," a Little, Brown representative said in a statement quoted by Publisher Weekly.

Funke will be publishing her future titles through her own publishing company she chose to call Breathing Books, which she established with the help of multimedia storytelling company Mirada Studios.  There, the writer will re-release "The Golden Yarn" with an all-new title, cover, design and a digital version on Nov. 17 though there will only be 5,000 copies to be printed, making it a "sort of rare, limited edition on paper."

She also plans to publish the "Reckless" series under the European sub-titles "The Petrified Flesh," "The Living Shadows" and "The Golden Yarn" instead of "Reckless," "Fearless" and the would-have-been "Heartless" as they were called in the US. "Fearless" serves as her latest and last published book with Chicken House.

A print version of a "Mirrorworld" app is also being prepared for a 2016 release as well as a new version of her book "Pirate Girl," "Ghosthunters" and every single picture books that are no longer in print.
