Andy Griffith Dies at 86

Andy Griffith, famous for "The Andy Griffith Show," died on Tuesday at his home on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. He was 86.

According to ABC News, the Dare County sheriff's office said that Griffith was rushed to the hospital early Tuesday morning.

Griffith's good friend and former President of the University of North Carolina, Bill Friday, told WITN that the actor passed away, according to the Huffington Post. The Associated Press and CNN also confirmed the news. No details about the death have been confirmed.

Griffith is best known for his role on "The Andy Griffith Show," as Andy Taylor, the folksy sheriff in the fictional southern town of Mayberry. On the show, he solved big crimes and dealt with the little problems in life. The show ran from 1960 to 1968, and critics consider the show to be "one of the top four of five sitcoms ever shown on television."

Andrew Samuel Griffith was born on June 1, 1926 in Mt. Airy, N.C. He graduated with a degree in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949. He then moved to New York and became a regular on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Steve Allen Show."

In 1972, Griffith started his own production company. His TV and film career expanded, appearing in 1975's "Hearts of the West" which Jeff Bridges.

The iconic actor also starred as a murder-solving attorney in the television series "Matlock," which aired until 1995. He was also known for his roles in movies and on the stage, as a producer and as a Grammy Award-winning gospel singer," according to CNN.

In 1996, Griffith recorded a gospel album, "I Love to Tell the Story: 25 Timeless Hymns" that went platinum and won a Grammy.

Griffith played an "80-something widowed grandfather who lives in a nursing home and awkwardly jumps back into the singles game. He tries Viagra and experiences oral sex, and says the words "horny" and "erection" in the 2009 movie "Play the Game," according to the New York Times.

Griffith came down with the muscular disease Guillain-Barre syndrome in 193, according to biography.com, but made full recovery. In 2000, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery, and had hip surgery following a fall in 2007, according to his IMDB profile.

Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son, Opie Taylor, wrote this on his Twitter account after learning about Griffith's death:

"His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations & shaped my life."

He is survived by wife Cindi and his daughter Dixie. Son Andrew Jr., known as Sam, died in 1996, reports MSNBC.
