With Apple's new iPhone 5 set to debut in San Francisco on Sept. 12, you might not expect any more big revelations on the phone prior to the unveiling, but then, when has Apple ever been predictable? Rumors are now circulating from sources close to the company that the Apple's new smart phone could also include fingerprint security.
Apple will secure its acquisition of a company specializing in fingerprint scanning next month, days after the latest iPhone goes on sale, suggesting the technology will be used to improve security in the world's bestselling phone, The Guardian reported.
The board of AuthenTec is expected to agree to a $365 million acquisition by Apple - one of the largest price tag's the California technology giant has ever paid in a takeover - when it votes on October 4.
AuthenTec specializes in mobile phone security and is developing 2D fingerprint sensors for Apple, according to the merger documents. The two companies have been talking since late last year and there have been suggestions the hi-tech sensors could appear as an eye-catching feature of the iPhone 5 when it is unwrapped on Wednesday.
"Will we see fingerprint technology in the new iPhone (or iPad)? It seems almost certain," wrote Matt Brian of technology blog My Next Web. "Details are scarce but [Apple's] desire to use the technology and see it developed quickly leads us to speculate that we could see it in just a matter of weeks."
In a recent company blogpost, AuthenTec executive Art Stewart wrote, "The real sweet spot for today's smart sensor is the NFC-enabled smartphone, where the smart sensor not only strengthens security but greatly increases the speed and convenience of mobile payment transactions. It accomplishes this by reducing multiple steps into one simple user action."
With a single swipe of a finger across the smart sensor, the technology allows a user to unlock their phone and turn on the NFC transmitter to enable the payment, which is then made by tapping the phone. Adding fingerprint scanning to the iPhone could both improve security for features such as payments and boarding passes, and speed up the transaction.
In other iPhone 5 rumor updates, a French blog site, NowhereElse.fr (English translation), is reporting that the iPhone 5's much-rumored new dock connector is as small as a microUSB plug.
Photos of a microUSB cable and photos of the new dock connector cable supplied by an anonymous source to the French site show the similarities between the two, most notably in size.

Rumors have floated around over the past few months that Apple would reduce the size of the current 30-pin connector used on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Initial reports said the new size would use 19 pins, but later reports pointed to an 8-pin or 9-pin connector.
The photos displayed by NowhereElse.fr show eight visible pins with the shell itself serving as a ninth contact. The new layout would boast at least one benefit over Apple's current connector. The cable could be plugged into an iDevice in either orientation, so that users don't have to struggle to figure out which way to connect it.
The smaller dock connector will reportedly appear not just on the new iPhone but on future iDevices, including the next iPad.
AuthenTec scrip (AUTH) closed flat Sept.7 at $8.03 with no change from its previous close, while Apple (AAPL) closed Sept.7 at $680.44, up $4.17 and 0.62 percent higher than the previous close.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 at a launch event Wednesday Sept. 12.
