Windows 8 Release Date: Will Few Apps Strategy Backfire For New HP Elite Pad 900, Microsoft Surface Tablet, Nook HD Success?

With Windows 8 arriving Oct. 26, the supposedly good news is already backfiring.

According to ComputerWorld, Microsoft still hasn't shown that there will be enough apps to lure new customers.

Last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer again touted Windows 8 as a lucrative development platform, a move seen by many as a pep rally for programmers.

"There will be customers coming and looking for apps. That I can assure you," Ballmer said at a San Francisco event for developers. "It's going to create a heck of a lot of opportunity for folks in this room to make millions," he said.

The late push and small number of apps now in the Windows Store doesn't give Microsoft a good leap forward.

"Microsoft has put a big burden on Windows 8 and Windows RT," said Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, referring to the tablet-oriented spinoff. "They have to have a large number of high-quality apps. I've said 5,000 is a reasonable number to be successful at launch. They don't need 100,000, but they need a decent number."

According to Wes Miller, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, as of Sept. 26, the Windows Store sported 2,452 apps, 1,741 of them available to US customers. About 86% were free.

"They're thinking long-term," said Moorhead. "Microsoft and their partners are taking a long-term view of this. What's important to them is getting Windows into mobility. They're not too concerned about making that first impression at launch."

Moorhead sees that as a mistake. "It's their strategy, but it's not what I would do," he said.

Some are still excited to see Windows 8 tablets and phones.

The Microsoft Surface Tablet hasn't been revealed yet, but both models (Windows 8 and Windows-RT) will feature a 10.6-inch Clear type Full HD displays with 16:9 widescreen. It will come with five 3mm touch covers, which all feature a revolutionary kickstand. The devices have both front and rear cameras and come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options. The 128GB is available only with Surface Pro.  Further, you can expand the memory using external memory sticks thanks to microSD card slot. It will only be able to go online using a short-range Wi-Fi connection.

HP introduced their new Windows 8 tablet recently, the new ElitePad 900.

It features a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800. It supports pen input and drive encryption, as well as optional 3G and 4G connectivity. According to PC World, the ElitePad 900 has an aluminum shell, with the IPS display coated in Gorilla Glass, making the tablet 9.2mm thick and weighing in at 1.5 pounds. HP says that the battery should last around ten hours on a single charge. It runs on an Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM with storage options of 32GB or 64GB. It as has a rear camera with 8-megapixel with a flash, and on the front there is a video call camera that supports 1080p HD quality video.

Barnes & Noble also will launch a new reading app specifically designed for Windows 8 this month for its new tablets, the new Nook HD and HD+.

A new smartphone that will feature the new Windows software is Nokia's Lumia 920. It takes many of the physical design elements from previous generations of Lumia handsets, but improves on internal hardware and display technology. Some of the new tech specs include PureMotion HD+ 4.5 inch display (1280 x 768 resolution), Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, NFC chip, 2,000mAh battery, and Qi wireless charging. Nokia is touting the Lumia 920′s premier feature as its new camera lens, the Carl Zeiss lens. It has rounded edges and colorful covers with a PureView camera.
