Bestselling Authors Team Up to Raise Money For Syrian Refugees

Buying a book from bestselling authors like Hilary Mantel and David Nicholls will not just treat book lovers with a good read but also give them a unique opportunity to lend a hand to Syrian refugees. The "Wolf Hall" and "One Day" writers are just two of the slew of novelists coming together for a special fundraiser for our brothers and sisters who are in need of crucial assistance.

Around 2000 copies of each one of the most popular books of the writers involved in the project were given to British book chain Waterstones, who will sell participating titles they will label with a "Buy Books for Syria" sticker for the fundraiser starting tomorrow. The profit for every volume sold will be donated to Oxfam to cater to its Syria Crisis Appeal.

Mantel's "Wolf Hall" and "Midnight Children" are for the taking. Nicholls' best-known novel "One Day" will also be sold for the said benefit as well. Participating authors such as Neil Gaiman and Lionel Shrivers donated copies of their respective books "The Graveyard Book" and "We Need to Talk about Kevin," which are titles the said authors are widely held and known for.

Readers can play an important part in the noble cause by purchasing books by other partaking novelists such as Mary Beard, William Boyd, Bill Bryson, Lee Child, Tracy Chevalier, Julia Donaldson, Mark Haddon, Robert Harris, Victoria Hislop and Khaled Hosseini.

Works from Marian Keyes, Caitlin Moran, Michael Morpurgo, JoJo Moyes, Philip Pullman, Ian Rankin, Alexandra McCall Smith, Ali Smith, David Walliams and Jacqueline Wilson will also be sold for the fundraiser. The complete list of the participating books will be announced on Oct. 1.

Every last cent acquired will be donated. The writers will not receive any, as per Waterstones managing director James Daunt who commented via The Guardian the authors and their publishers as well as warehouses who agreed to take part without hesitation, adding that none of them have problems "doing it for free."

"The cause is so obviously good that anything we can do is worth doing," Pullman said as quoted by the official Waterstones blog. Smith adds that her support stems from her "heart, mind and soul" while Moran is happy that she can do something about "the biggest refugee crisis in history" through this noble project.

"Our target is to raise one million pounds and all funds raised will be ring-fenced by Oxfam for aid for Syrian refugees and displaced people in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan," Waterstones wrote on its blog. Those who want to directly give a donation can do so through Oxfam's Syria Crisis Appeal official website.
