True crime books hook people with untold stories and fresh views on famous cases. Writers explore chilling stories, talking to people close to the crime, even those who did it. They use their own experiences for frightening top-selling books.

Here are six popular nonfiction crime books.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

'The Devil in the White City' combines careful study and exciting storytelling to reveal a fascinating story during America's move into the 20th century. A respected architect, Daniel Burnham, fights problems to make the White City for the Chicago World's Fair. At the same time, Dr. Henry Holmes builds a murder hotel nearby that targets young women. Larson brings in real people from history in this story. He mixes truth and pretends very well, giving a good look into the secret tricks of America's Golden Age.

American Predator by Maureen Callahan

'American Predator' looks into the life of Israel Keyes. He was a complex and secretive serial killer that is forgotten by more famous names like John Wayne Gacy or Ted Bundy. Maureen Callahan shows Keyes's unbelievable and scary actions for 14 years. She tells how he carefully planned them and killed across the whole country with methodical steps. The book is about a journalist's mission to learn how Keyes avoided getting caught for a long time. It gives us an unnerving trip into the thoughts of someone without guilt and shows where standard investigating methods can fail.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

'In Cold Blood' is a best-selling story about real crimes. It looks into the brutal killing of the Clutter family in 1959 in Holcomb, Kansas. The family's pointless killing, done with a shotgun at close range, confused the police because there was no apparent reason and only a few hints. Capote carefully puts together what happened during a crime in one of the first actual crime books. He goes over all the steps of finding and catching criminals and then putting them on trial to get punishment for their wrongdoings.

The story is exciting with mystery and feelings, and it stays in Capote's mind long after he has finished writing. After its time, 'In Cold Blood' gives a deep understanding of violent crimes in America. This book is a never-changing study of real crime that scares and makes your brain think hard.

Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi

As the prosecutor in Manson's trial, Bugliosi wrote this book about the famous 1969 Tate-LeBianca killings. This book tells us how Charles Manson and his fanatic group severely injured seven people, including an expecting actress. They did it to show their support for Helter Bugliosi, conducting the careful investigation, complicated trial, and rebuilding of Manson's beliefs in a classic true crime book. In addition to being a good trial story, 'Helter Skelter' is an essential social record. This book highlights the darkness surrounding the 60s.

The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule

'The Stranger Beside Me' by Ann Rule is a story about her friendship with Ted Bundy, one of America's most prolific serial killers. First meeting at a crisis clinic in 1971, Rule did not know that her friend Bundy would later be found out as a possible criminal for terrible murders in the Pacific Northwest. The book talks about Bundy's rugged early life, their changing friendship, and Rule finding out something terrifying from a friend. It is a mix of study, news reporting, and personal memories.

The Night Stalker by Philip Carlo

The true story behind the infamous serial killer case that inspired a hit Netflix series is recounted in this book. Drawing from death row interviews with the killer, Richard Ramirez, the narrative traces his criminal journey from initial encounters with the law to the heinous Los Angeles murders. The book details the investigation that ultimately led to his arrest and serves as a reissue, providing insights into Ramirez's disturbing crime spree.
