'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Casting Rumors: Angelina Jolie to Direct R-Rated, Kinky Film? Wants a 'Major Part,' 'Up for Challenge'

Now that "Fifty Shades of Grey" has a screenwriter, it seems logical that filmmakers will be looking for a director.

Fans got exciting news yesterday (Oct. 8) when Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced that Kelly Marcel will write the screenplay for the highly anticipated "Fifty Shades" movie.

One time, Producer Dana Brunetti let the fans known on Twitter, "Cast of a film is usually decided on with a directors input..." This most likely means that everything "Fifty Shades" fans are saying are just rumors and that the crew has not picked a director, or a screenwriter for that matter.

This means that picking a director is the next step of the film adaption.

"Tomb Raider" actress Angelina Jolie might direct the racy film. E! Online threw the suggestion out there in their report saying that it is possible.

In June, Deadline reported that Jolie was having a conversation or two about directing the movie. It said, "The studio says that no discussions have been had, but they note that if she was interested, that the studio would be also. They loved her directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey."

Jolie director "In the Land of Blood and Honey" which was released in 2011. She was wrote the screenplay, according to IMDb.

This goes in line with rumors that surfaced in August about sources saying Jolie wanted a role in the film.

According to The National Ledger, Jolie has apparently been reading the novel dubbed as 'mommy porn' after being introduced to it while shooting her new film in the United Kingdom.

Workers on the set of "Maleficent" persuaded the 37-year-old actress to pick up E.L. James' book and since then she has become interested in a part in the forthcoming motion picture.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper, ''Angelina kept hearing about the book while she was in the UK. All the girls on set were talking about it and how it's being made into a film.

''Angelina went out and bought herself a copy, thinking she'd love a part in the hot topic on everyone's lips at the moment. She knows the film is bound to be a huge hit.''

The insider continued, ''Ange is dead-set on a major part. She's up for the challenge.''

Many alledged that the "major part" meant playing 21-year-old Anastasia Steele, however, the well-known actress might be too old for the part. But being a director of a highly anticipated movie is actually a "major part" as well, so maybe that is what it means.

Another name that's been out there for director is "Cosmopolis" director David Cronenberg.

"I haven't read it. It's not new," Cronenberg said in an interview with Indie Wire in August. "I remember 'The Story of O,' that popular French S & M novel was made into movie. It's old stuff to me in terms of subject matter. The fact that it's current and a big hit is new. Even Tony Richardson's 'Madame' had elements."

He was positive about being a director, and even said that he would read "Fifty Shades of Grey" if he was presented with it.

"Focus has got the rights. I wouldn't have any qualms about it for myself. If Focus offered it to me I'd read it."

The "Fifty Shades" trilogy ("Fifty Shades of Grey," "Fifty Shades Darker," "Fifty Shades Freed"), written by E.L. James, tells the story of 22-year-old recent college grad Anastasia Steele, who enters into a dominant/submissive sexual relationship with 27-year old sexy billionaire Christian Grey, and both explore Christian's world of BDSM while trying to understand their complicated relationship.
