Nearly twenty years after the 1996 sci-fi film, "Independence Day: Resurgence" is bringing more extraterrestrial danger next year.

Before the franchise hits theaters for the second time, there is a new medium that will tell the "Independence Day" story in a darker perspective.

Titan Comics is releasing a comic book series as prequel to "Resurgence", reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The comic book series will bridge the gap between the 1996 film and the upcoming sequel. However, no details about the writers and artists, nor its release date, have been revealed.

Moreover, no official title has been announced, but editor Steve White told The Hollywood Reporter that the comic book will be "a golden opportunity to segue nicely into next year's blockbuster sequel by taking the mythos of the original and maybe adding a little darkness to it."

Titan Comics also described the comic book series as a "rich psychological prison drama" set after the aliens' attempt to destroy all life on Earth.

Big screen adaptations of comic books are popular these days. Titan Comics, on the other hand, has a list of upcoming comic books with stories adapted from screen.

This list includes comic book series of video games "Deus Ex" and "Assassins's Creed", Sony TV series "The Blacklist" and the BBC TV series "Doctor Who".

The 1996 film "Independence Day" is a sci-fi movie depicting a chaotic world in the middle of the aliens' attempt to invade Earth and suck all its natural resources. When a technician and computer wizard find out about what the aliens are planning, the fate of the world suddenly lies on their hands.

In the film, the term "independence" does not only celebrate America's freedom from the British Empire, but the Earth's rescue from extraterrestrial life.

The film, directed by Roland Emmerich, starred Will smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblym. According to Box Office Mojo, it grossed more than $800 million with a big overseas success.

This time, "Indepence Day: Resurgence" is still directed by Roland Emmerich. Dean Delvin, Herald Kloser and Emmerich are producing.

Sadly, Will Smith turned down the sequel and will not be returning. "Independence Day" is one of his first blockbusters before "Men in Black".

Meanwhile, other cast members Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner are returning for the sequel. New addtions to the cast Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

In August, director Ronald Emmerich announced that the filming for "Resurgence" has officially ended, Entertainment Weekly reports. The film is coming to theaters on June 24, 2016.
